Short answer: If Plus keeps hitting its limit and you mostly code or research, start with Pro 100. If you run Codex or deep research all day and still hit Pro 100's limit, pick Pro 200. The tiers launched on September 29, 2026; OpenAI's Help Center updated its explanation on October 20 (the official page is final):
- Pro 500 is new, $500/month, and the only Pro tier with ultrafast mode.
- Pro 200 is open to new subscribers again, still $200/month, but new subscriptions that don't qualify for legacy usage get less usage than the old Pro 200.
- If you held an active Pro 200 at any time between September 22 and 10am PT September 29, 2026, you keep the old usage until October 29, 2026, then move to the lower level.

OpenAI's Help Center doesn't state a "× Plus" multiple for any tier. The only sourced figure comes from the press: according to TNW, OpenAI said at DevDay on September 29, 2026 that from October 30, Pro 200's included usage in ChatGPT Work and Codex falls from 20× to 10× the Plus allowance, and GPT-6 Pro chat messages fall from 200 to 100 a week. Existing subscribers keep their current limits until October 29 and get a one-time $2,500 usage-credit grant that expires at year end. Which one for which kind of use
- Plus runs out a few times a week, but you're not on it all day: Pro 100.
- Full-time developer, Codex open all day: Pro 200. A new Pro 200 has less room than before September, so don't size it from old "20×" posts.
- You need ultrafast mode: Pro 500 is the only option. Ultrafast burns included usage at 8× the Standard rate; once that's gone it bills credits at 6× the Standard credit rate. Faster isn't proportionally better.
- Only Codex runs out and you don't want a new tier: stay where you are and add a Codex credits pack; included usage is used first, then credits.
If you're on the old Pro 200
- If you held an active Pro 200 at any time from September 22 to 10am PT September 29, you keep the old usage until October 29, 2026, then drop to the new level at the same price.
- Keeping old usage isn't an upgrade to Pro 500 and doesn't add ultrafast mode.
- Cancel and resubscribe on the same account and you still qualify, as long as you fit that window.
