# Out of Codex usage? Add ChatGPT Credits
ChatGPT Credits are OpenAI's pay-as-you-go add-on: when the Codex usage included in your Plus or Pro plan runs out, you keep going on your Credits balance instead of upgrading. According to OpenAI, Credits currently work in Codex, ChatGPT Work and ChatGPT for Excel; your plan's included usage is used first, and Credits are drawn only after that. They are not API credits and are separate from any OpenAI API balance. Xingqiao Subscriptions tops them up in Chinese yuan (CNY): 500 credits from ¥199 and 1000 from ¥398, valid for 12 months from purchase. ## What can I do when Codex usage runs out?
Codex on Plus and Pro has a 5-hour and a weekly limit. Once you hit one, there are three options depending on how often it happens.
### Wait for the reset
If it's not urgent, wait. The usage page in Codex or settings shows the next reset time; in the Codex CLI, /status shows it too.
### Add Credits
Best when you go over now and then and don't want to change plans: the plan stays the same and usage draws from your Credits balance, which lasts 12 months.
### Upgrade to Pro
If you hit the limit every week, Pro 5x / 20x is simpler long term. A Plus plan bought from us can be upgraded mid-cycle, with unused days credited at ¥6 per day.
## How do I add ChatGPT Credits?
The same flow as a plan top-up, with no account password or verification code.
### Step 1: Choose an amount and pay
Pick 500 or 1000 credits above and pay by WeChat Pay or Stripe card / Apple Pay.
### Step 2: Submit your Session
Sign in to the ChatGPT account in a browser (it must have an active Plus or Pro plan), open https://chatgpt.com/api/auth/session, copy everything and paste it on the details page, then confirm the email and submit.
### Step 3: Check your balance
Once added, the Credits balance shows under Settings > Usage in ChatGPT, or Usage & Billing in the Codex app.
## Frequently asked questions
### Out of Codex usage: buy Credits or upgrade to Pro?
Going over now and then: Credits, from ¥199 for 500, and your plan stays the same. Hitting the limit almost every week: Pro works out cheaper. Send support a screenshot of recent usage if you want help deciding.
### Can a Free or Go account add Credits?
We only add Credits to accounts with an active Plus or Pro plan. OpenAI currently offers Credits to only a small group of Free and Go users; most are asked to upgrade to Plus instead.
### Are ChatGPT Credits the same as OpenAI API credits?
No. Credits only work inside your ChatGPT account, in Codex, ChatGPT Work and ChatGPT for Excel. They can't be used to call the OpenAI API.
### Are Credits used up right away?
No. Your plan's included usage goes first, and Credits are drawn only after that. Any unused balance stays valid for 12 months from purchase.
### Can I get a refund on Credits?
Once Credits land in your account they count as delivered and, like an active subscription, are generally not refunded. If they never arrive because of a problem on our side, we refund after checking; see the refund policy.
